After Congressional hearings, much media attention on tire and vehicle safety, and strong support from the House and Senate, the TREAD Act was signed into law November 1, 2000 by President Clinton.

The TREAD Act mandates revision of the tire safety standard, dashboard low tire pressure indicators on new vehicles, and rollover testing and rating for vehicles. It requires tire and auto executives to notify the government within five days of a foreign safety recall and "customer satisfaction" program.  Data on insurance and warranty claims must be maintained and executives who try to cover up defects that lead to death or injury may receive prison sentences of up to fifteen years.
