Remembering Ed Cohn

Ed (Eddie) Cohn, 74, former tire dealer & longtime Executive Director of the California Tire Dealers Association-South, passed away Monday February 8, 2010.

He was born September 6, 1935 in Cincinnati Ohio & moved with his parents to California when he was 3 years old.

He attended the Roosevelt High School in Los Angeles and graduated in 1953.

Having honorably served in the Marine Corps, he graduated from Cal. State & joined his father in 1958 in “Cohn’s Tire.”

Mr. Cohn built the Southern California branch of the California Tire Dealers Association into a strong organization, focusing on recruiting independent tire dealers.  He paid close attention to the CIWMB (now CalRecycle) & its tire programs that are funded with the fee charged on the sale of new tires.  Mr. Cohn had a national reputation, & was prominent every year at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show. He possessed a lively writing style in his monthly association publication, & his acerbic wit was on display from time to time with his letters to the editor of Tire Business.

Until the past couple of years when he suffered some health setbacks, Mr. Cohn was an indefatigable advocate for his association members, and tirelessly organized fundraising events such as the annual Day at the Races, basketball & golf

tournaments, & his friendly (and legal) lottery.

Mr. Cohn was married to his wife Lorraine for 48 years. They have four children – two sons and two daughters.
